As part of its commitment to the transmission of knowledge, the firm Gauchet Art Asiatique recently intervened with second-year auctioneer students.
This session was based on a simple principle: to expose future art market professionals to real objects in all their diversity, and to provide them with concrete tools for interpretation, directly applicable in sales situations.
An object-based approach

The presentation was structured around a deliberately heterogeneous collection: Chinese porcelain, bronzes, sculpted objects, as well as several Vietnamese and Japanese works. This diversity allowed for an exploration of the major issues in Asian art expertise:
* identification of materials and techniques
* stylistic and iconographic analysis
* dating and attribution
* understanding of uses and production contexts
* Introduction to the concepts of market and value
Far from a theoretical approach, each object served as an anchor point to develop reasoning, formulate hypotheses and refine the perspective.
To train in observation, more than in knowledge

The goal is not the accumulation of knowledge, but the acquisition of a method. Knowing how to observe, compare, doubt, and verify.
When faced with porcelain, bronze, or lacquer, the question is never simply “what it is”, but “why is it this, and not something else”.
This work of decomposition (forms, decorations, patinas, techniques) constitutes the basis of all rigorous expertise.
An immersion in the reality of the market
Beyond the technical aspects, this intervention also made it possible to place the objects back into their real context: that of auctions.
Understanding market expectations, presentation logic, valuation challenges and the circulation of works is essential for future auctioneers.
Direct interaction, student questions, and the handling of the pieces all contribute fully to this immersion.
A commitment to transmission

Gauchet Art Asiatique places particular importance on training the next generation of art market professionals. These exchanges allow for the transmission of high standards, a methodology, and a way of working, all rooted in the daily practice of appraisal.
We thank ANECP for their invitation, as well as all the students present for the quality of their attention and the relevance of their contributions.
Gauchet Art Asiatique assists auction houses, collectors and institutions in the expertise, appraisal and valuation of Asian works of art.
